    ITDP-China's BRT strategy

Support the implementation of four gold standard BRT projects over the next 5 years, with associated policy reforms, as the basis for 'urban development demonstration corridors'. Through strategic communications, document impacts and promote replication of the projects and policies to other cities.

    Cities

    Guangzhou

The Guangzhou BRT opened in 2010 after ITDP with GMEDRI led the planning, design and implementation from the conceptual design in 2005 through detailed engineering design and construction. The system averages 850,000 passengers per day, and together with Transmilenio is theonly BRT system worldwide to carry more than 25,000 passengers per hour in a single directionpast a single point, which is higher than most metro and all light rail lines worldwide. The Guangzhou BRT won the Sustainable Transport Award in 2011 and has won many other national and international awards. The Guangzhou BRT is the first of around 5–10 ‘gold standard’ BRT corridors needed to ‘rescue’ the reputation of BRT in China and influence the trajectory of urban transport development in China. ITDP-China had a lead role in the planning and design of the system during 2004-2008, a support role to GMEDRI in engineering design & construction in 2009, and a support role to the Communications Commission during the institutional set-up and initial operation (2008-2010). The system commenced operation in February 2010 and is the First 'Gold Standard' BRT in Asia. See the Guangzhou BRTimpact analysis, site visit program, system data, andphotos.

    Yichang

ITDP China in 2012 won an international bid by the Asian Development Bank to provide the BRT preliminary design in Yichang, the second largest city in Hubei Province after Wuhan, and the site of the Three Gorges Dam. This major project features a BRT corridor through the heart of the city, and ITDP prepared the preliminary corridor design, demand analysis, operations, station and road design, modal integration plan (focusing on pedestrians & bicycles), and other system features. The construction of the Yichang BRT started in February 2014. The system opened on 15 July 2015. The full phase 1 and 2 corridors will run 23.9 kilometers with 37 stations connecting major urban sub-centres in the north and south of the city. ITDP's preliminary impact analysis is availablehere.

    Lanzhou

With the support of ADB project managers, ITDP China and GMEDRI transformed the ADB’s transport project in Lanzhou from one focusing mainly on utility tunnels to a high capacity BRT corridor. ITDP played a key role from project formulation in early 2009 through the design and planning in 2010-2011, working closely with GMEDRI and ADB project officers. The Lanzhou BRT is the first BRT system in the world based on a split station concept with BRT buses in the same direction stopping on both sides of a platform. This innovative design offers roughly the same capacity as that of a traditional split BRT station, but with half the length and only one meter in extra width. The system carries nearly 300,000 daily passengers on an average weekday. See the Lanzhou BRTimpact analysis, system data, andphotos. The Lanzhou BRT is also now integrated with abike sharing system,in which ITDP-China also played a key role in planning and design.

    Vientiane

ITDP-China lead role in the planning & design, with a detailed conceptual design completed during 2014. The design covered BRT road and intersection design, BRT stations (location, dimensions and configuration, architecture), BRT service planning, modal integration, an overhaul of downtown traffic circulation, analysis of benefits, coverage of resettlement and environmental aspects, communications and outreach, and other aspects. The renderings below were part of the final report outputs.ITDP's proposed projects were approved on 11 March 2015 and is now the subject of a major loan and grant funded package to be implemented in coming years.

    Nanning

Nanning's first BRT corridor is being developed using a PPP model and extends from the railway station in the city center to the new high speed railway station in the east. During 2015 ITDP provided key input to the Nanning BRT corridor planning and design, working with GMEDRI, and also carried out a BRT impact analysis baseline survey along with preliminary proposals for TOD and TDM measures along the BRT corridor.

    Dandong

Dandong's planned BRT corridor is 25km long with 37 stations. The corridor will connect the coach terminal in the south to Zhenzhupao in the north, passing through the heart of the city center and accessing the main train station. The corridor serves the northern Zhen’an District, the downtown Yuanbao District, and Zhenxing District. The corridor will also serve major new development areas to the south, including the new location of the Dandong municipal government offices. The BRT corridor passes through a range of appealing and diverse urban roads. ITDP has been involved with the Dandong project from the early stages, hosting Dandong officials on study tours to see the Guangzhou BRT and Yichang BRT and providing input to the planning and design being carried out by GMEDRI in Dandong.

    Other cities

Other cities ITDP-China has completed BRT plans for include Guiyang (in planning), Jakarta (reconstruction of corridors 1 and 6, not implemented), Kuala Lumpur (in engineering design), Johor Bahru (in planning), Jiuquan (not yet implemented), Tianjin (not yet implemented), Harbin (not yet implemented) and Ulanbator (in planning). ITDP also provided input to the BRT planning in Wuhan (in engineering design).
