    ITDP-China's Transit-oriented development (TOD) strategy

Support the implementation of gold standard TOD projects and related policies, focusing on BRT station area zoning, urban design and access, and BRT corridor development. Document best practices and impacts as part of a strategic communications program to support replication, and establish a special zone around BRT station areas that can be expanded citywide.

Creating vibrant cities where walking, cycling, and transit are safe, convenient, and attractive requires smart urban planning and land use policies. ITDP-China's work in this area focuses on BRT (and sometimes metro) station area development. ITDP’s urban development program works with governments, developers, and the planning and design community, providing technical advice and policy recommendations supporting the integration of land use and transportation especially focused along urban development 'demonstration' corridors centered around high capacity BRT systems.

    Recent developments

Developments from late 2015 and not yet included in this page include Yichang BRT station area development, TOD planning in Nanning along a coming BRT corridor, Tianjin land use & pedestrian streets in Heping District, Shenzhen best practice documentation, and research on special zones for BRT station areas.

    Cities

    Guangzhou

TOD work in Guangzhou has focused on BRT corridor station area development, with recommendations successfully implemented in several locations. TOD work has also involved study and documentation of best practice case studies in the Pearl River Delta; primarily Guangzhou. The best practices are documented atBest Practices in Urban Development in the Pearl River Delta.

    Yichang

TOD work in Yichang has focused on urban development along the BRT corridor, and especially around the BRT stations, including BRT station access improvements that are now a proposed subject of a large new ADB loan. A major development site in the downtown is also a focus of ITDP's work in Yichang. This work is ongoing.

    Lanzhou

TOD work in Lanzhou focused on station area development around the Peili Guangchang, Liujiabu, and Toahai Shichang BRT stations, as well as on an underground mall connecting several BRT stations. The underground mall was implemented and has been very successful.

    Tianjin

TOD work in Tianjin included a study to develop TOD proposals in 3 metro station areas together with a World Bank expert team, and is currently focusing on applying ITDP's TOD Standard as a guideline for all new development along two new metro corridors.

    Other cities

TOD inputs have been (or are being) provided in other cities including Nanning, Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Wuhan, and Vientiane.
